The liger is a hybrid offspring of a female Tiger (Panthera tigris) and a male Lion (Panthera leo) .The liger has parents in the same genus but of different species.
The Liger has a roar and strength of a male Lion with the speed and tactics of a female Tiger.
The Liger is distinct from the similar hybrid called the Tigon, and is the largest of all known species of felines. They enjoy swimming, which is a characteristic of tigers, and are very sociable like lions.
In the year 1825, G. B. Whittaker made an engraving of three Liger cubs born in the year 1824 which were the first Liger cubs to be bornt. The parents and their three liger offsprings are also depicted with their trainer in a 19th-century painting in the naïve style.
It is an estimation that an adult fully grown male Lion weighs about 440-500 pounds and a fully grown female Tiger weighs about 320-360 pounds but if we talk about their offspring that means a Liger then it can weighs around 700-900 pounds which makes it the largest big cat (feline) species in the world.
We can easily see from the above footage that a Liger’s size is almost double than a Tiger’s size. Also male ligers are sterile in nature but females are fertile.
This is “Hercules” a male Liger which is the heaviest and largest big cat found ever in this world. He was born in November, 2003 and now he is almost 18 years old but he is still in good condition.
We can easily see his size when compared with a human being. His total length is 11 feet and he weighs around 940 pounds that’s why he was captured in National Geographic’s documentary. Due to his hulk size, his name is also written in “Guinness Book of World Records “.
It is estimated that around 100 ligers are present in the world. 30 belong to private owners in the USA and around 20 in China. The rest are raised in captivity in Germany, South Africa, Russia, and South Korea. That’s why ligers are very rare species and it should be conserved.
